I finally did it, I bit the bullet, and bought myself a Diptyque candle. Pretty much everyone has seen these candles at some point recently (perhaps, lit in the background of your fave youtube guru's makeup tutorial, or room tour?), so, I won't go on about it like it's the newest thing in the world. I am excited about it though, because, well, it's new to my environment. Funny enough, it wasn't fashion bloggers or Youtube gurus that put me on to Diptyque; my first time ever hearing about Diptyque was in the Lupe Fiasco song, "Gold Watch" (I can't believe that was in 2007!! OMG!). Yes, a rapper, turned me onto luxurious French-made candles. I looked them up, and have been coveting them ever since. Over the following years, my art student budget wouldn't let me buy one without feeling extremely guilty, hell, even now, that I suppose I am an adult, $60 for a candle seems crazy— but, this year, I made an exception for it, because, one: I've wanted it for too damn long, and two: It was my birthday, and I hadn't gotten anything special for myself yet.
When I checked out last week, I made sure to opt for the gift wrapping, yes, even though this was to myself. You know what, treating yourself is an art! Sometimes, yes, we want instant gratification, and we buy things mindlessly for ourselves all the time; but, sometimes, when you have to wait for what you buy (especially, when it's a special thing), you should make it worth your while! I knew (not from experience, but, from hoping) that if I got myself a gift wrapped candle, Diptyque would make me feel special, and I wasn't wrong. Today, as I'm fending off what's left of a nasty cold, I opened this box, and it immediately made me feel better than I had felt in days. And really, even if it weren't my birthday, and even if I was in tip-top shape, I still would have chosen the complimentary gift wrap, because treat yo self.
As a designer, the packaging, and branding are straight up aesthetic porn (Minimalism! Swoon!). The gift box itself was kind of a treat, and now, I have something pretty to put all my candle supplies into. As for the candle, it smells amazing. It smells like a blanket feels: warm, soft, and comforting. No lie, this is the best amber scented candle I have ever smelled. Amber has to be one of my favorite fragrance notes, period, because it's sweet yet masculine, complex, and not overbearing. The candle burns beautifully, and in less than twenty minutes, my apartment smells like warm Amber. I couldn't be happier!
So, now I understand, firsthand, the obsession with these candles. I'm already eyeballing my next one! I might do a couple of the minis, even! Diptyque lovers, which fragrance should I go with next? Candle connoisseurs, what other luxury candle brands should I check out?
