Review: Le Labo Body Cream (Hinoki)

Le Labo Body Cream (Hinoki)

What are your favorite scents?

Mine tend to be dark, spicy, and warm. I look for scents that are enigmatic, and sultry. I love scents that make me feel like I’m far away, in a cabin in the woods, fireside, wrapped in a soft blanket while it softly rains outside.

Yes, that’s an oddly specific scene to conjure up in my mind, and Hinoki by Le Labo, the signature scent found in this body cream, is all of that fantasy, and then some.

What It Is

“This plant-based formula is made with avocado (to repair), shea butter (to nourish), coconut oil (to hydrate), and is also paraben-free, phthalate-free and artificial colorant-free. The Hinoki scent is inspired by the Buddhist temples of Mount Koya in Japan which all carry the mystical, profusely warm and mesmerizing scent of the hinoki trees from the surrounding forest.”

What I Think

I’m just going to be blunt—I am obsessed with this cream. The smell, the texture, the way it feels on my skin—it’s sublime.

I’ve already gushed about the scent, but it bears repeating: it smells incredible. Like take-a-deep-whiff-and-roll-your-eyes-into-the-back-of-your-head incredible. It’s earthy, a little spicy, a tad bit musky. It’s perfectly unisex. My boyfriend and I have a bottle of the shower gel in this same scent that we split, and as much as I hate having to share, it smells bomb on him, so it’s kind of a win-win for me in the end.

Hinoki is unfortunately not available as a standalone fragrance (wtf, Le Labo), but fortunately, the scent from this lotion lasts quite awhile after application (like all day, basically), so that sort of makes up for it. Sort of.

Texturally, it’s dense, and decadent. It feels like running your finger down the side of a cake iced in buttercream—only you can’t eat this. The cream is a blend of avocado oil and shea butter, which are two ingredients I tend to love for my body. They are so rich, and nourishing, especially for the winter when my skin is super dry.

This stuff moisturizes like a dream, and sinks in easily and quickly. I noticed that it doesn’t feel greasy at all, especially considering it’s made from all these wonderful oils.

Oh, and I forgot to mention, it’s vegan and cruelty free.

Yay or Nay?

For the scent alone, I think this is worth it to grab. I think everyone will love this scent, especially for the cold fall and winter months. The fact that it’s actually super creamy, and moisturizing is incredible, and makes me feel like no part of the formula was an after-thought.

You know how sometimes you get a lotion that smells incredible but feels thin, and doesn’t keep you moisturized? Or, there’s ones that moisturize well, but smell too synthetic? This falls in neither category. It does everything well.

I know what you’re thinking, and yes, you’re right—at the very least a lotion should be moisturizing—but we’ve all used enough mediocre ones to know that that isn’t always the case. They aren’t all created equally, because if they were, Le Labo’s wouldn’t be such a standout.
